The prism behind it

Check addresses before shipping6 questions

Fields

  • Delivery address, with each address column as column: value

Context

The addresses come from the order export of Mossgate Home, an online homeware shop that ships to the UK and Ireland by courier. Each row is the delivery address of one order, with the address columns as the customer filled them in at checkout, written as "column: value"; an empty column shows nothing after its name. The answers hold orders for the customer service team to fix before the labels are printed. Whether a postcode or Eircode exists and matches the town is checked in code by our address lookup service; this check reads what the lookup cannot, such as notes typed into address lines and parts left out. What a complete address needs: - UK: a house number or building name, a street, a town and a full postcode. - Ireland: a house number or building name, a street or townland, a town or county, and an Eircode. Our courier needs the Eircode for every Irish address. - Our courier does not deliver to PO Boxes, BFPO addresses or parcel lockers.

Questions

  1. Does the delivery address give everything our courier needs, under our address rules? Yes / No

Use the rules for the country in the context. Delivery notes, names and phone numbers in the address lines do not fill a missing part. Yes: Every part the rules require is given, and the address is not a PO Box, BFPO or locker. No: At least one required part is missing, or the address is one our courier does not deliver to.

  2. Which country is the delivery address in? Choice

Go by the country column when it is filled in, and otherwise by the town, county and the form of the postcode or Eircode.

    • United Kingdom England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, or a UK postcode such as NG1 6HL.
    • Ireland The Republic of Ireland, or an Eircode such as D02 X285.
  3. Which required part of the delivery address is missing? Choice

Use the rules for the country in the context. A part counts as given when it appears in any address column, even the wrong one. Pick one option.

    • Nothing Every part the rules require is given.
    • House number or name The street is given, but no house number, building name or flat number.
    • Street or townland No street, road or, in Ireland, townland is given.
    • Town or county No town, city or, in Ireland, county is given.
    • Postcode or Eircode No postcode or Eircode is given, or only part of one.
    • Several parts Two or more required parts are missing.
  4. Do the address lines contain delivery notes, a phone number or anything else that is not part of the address? Yes / No

Count instructions such as "leave with neighbour" or "side gate", a phone number, an email address, opening hours or a message to us in an address column. A building or company name that is part of the address does not count. Yes: At least one address column holds something that is not part of the address. No: The address columns hold only the address.

  5. Is the delivery address a PO Box, BFPO address or parcel locker? Yes / No

Count "PO Box", "P.O. Box", "BFPO", a named parcel locker or pick-up point, and a Post Office "poste restante" address. Yes: The address is one of these. No: The address is a street address.

  6. Does the delivery address look like a test entry or placeholder rather than a real address? Yes / No

Count entries such as "test", "asdf", "123 Fake Street", "N/A", "same as billing", "xxx" or a line that repeats the customer's name. Yes: At least one address column holds a test entry or placeholder. No: The address columns look like a real address, complete or not.
