Fields

  • Job title, as typed into the CRM or a form

Context

The titles come from the job title field of our CRM, filled in by contacts on web forms, by sales reps and by list imports. They are typed freely, with abbreviations such as Sr., Mgr, VP, Eng and Ops, and sometimes several roles or a region in one title. The answers fill the department, seniority and region columns used to segment campaigns and route leads. They describe the job title only, never the person.

Questions

  1. Which department does this job title belong to? Choice

Go by the function the title names, reading through abbreviations. When the title names two roles, use the first. A title that names no function, such as "Manager" alone, is the insufficient information option.

    • Sales Selling and account management: sales reps, account executives, business development, sales operations, revenue operations and sales enablement.
    • Marketing Brand, demand generation, content, communications, events, product marketing and growth.
    • Customer success and support Customer success, customer support, service desk, onboarding and implementation for customers.
    • Operations Running the business day to day: operations, supply chain, logistics, procurement, facilities and business operations.
    • Engineering Building software or hardware: software engineers, developers, architects, QA, DevOps and engineering managers.
    • Product and design Product managers, product owners, UX and UI designers and researchers.
    • IT and security Internal IT, systems administration, networks, information security and data protection officers.
    • Data and analytics Data analysts, data scientists, data engineers, business intelligence and analytics.
    • Finance Accounting, finance, controlling, treasury, payroll, audit and financial planning.
    • HR and people Human resources, recruiting, talent, learning and people operations.
    • Legal and compliance Lawyers, counsel, paralegals, compliance and risk officers.
    • General management Leads the whole business rather than one function: CEO, founder, owner, president, managing director or general manager.
  2. How senior is the role this job title describes? Scale

Go by the level words in the title. A title with no level word, such as "Accountant" or "Software Engineer", is Mid. "Head of" a function is Director.

    • Junior Entry level: intern, trainee, apprentice, graduate, assistant, junior or associate.
    • Mid A working role with no level word, such as Analyst, Engineer or Specialist.
    • Senior individual A senior role without a team to manage: Senior, Lead, Principal, Staff or Expert.
    • Manager Manages a team or a function: Manager, Senior Manager, Team Lead or Supervisor.
    • Director Director, Senior Director or Head of a function.
    • Executive Top of the company or a whole function: Vice President, SVP, EVP, any Chief officer, founder, owner, partner, president or managing director.
  3. Which world region does the job title name, if any? Choice

Count a region, a country or a city written in the title, such as "(EMEA)", "UK & Ireland", "LATAM" or "Singapore". The region of the company or the contact is not judged here.

    • EMEA Europe, the Middle East or Africa, or a country or city there.
    • Americas North, Central or South America, or a country or city there.
    • APAC Asia or the Pacific, including Australia and New Zealand.
    • Global The title says global, worldwide or international.
    • No region named The title names no region, country or city.
  4. Does the job title combine two or more different roles? Yes / No

Count two jobs joined in one title, such as "Founder & CTO" or "Office Manager / Bookkeeper". One role over two related areas, such as "Rev Ops & Enablement", is one role. Yes: The title holds two or more different roles. No: The title holds one role.

  5. Is the text a job title that can be classified? Yes / No

Answer No for text that is not a job title: blanks and fillers such as "n/a", "-" or "me", a company name, an email address, a test entry, or words such as "Student", "Retired" or "Looking for work". Yes: The text is a job title. No: The text is not a job title.
