Context

The products are new or changed items in the catalogue of Hartwell & Co, an online retailer of home, garden, outdoor and gift products. Each product is read when it is created or its text changes. The answers set flags that a person confirms: the compliance lead confirms age checks, and the dangerous goods specialist decides how anything hazardous is packed, labelled and shipped. Judge the physical contents of the product, including every item in a kit, bundle or gift set, not the category it is filed under. Our age-check list (a checkout and delivery age check applies): 1. Bladed articles: knives of any kind, folding or locking blades, axes, razor blades, multi-tools with a blade. Wiper blades, fan blades and blunt butter knives are not bladed articles. 2. Alcohol: drinks with alcohol, and gift sets or kits that contain them. 3. Tobacco and nicotine: cigarettes, tobacco, vapes, e-liquids, nicotine pouches. 4. Fireworks and pyrotechnics: fireworks, sparklers, flares, smoke grenades. 5. Lighter gas and solvents: butane refills, lighter fluid, solvent-based glues and cleaners. 6. Age-rated media: games and films rated 18. 7. Adult products. Our dangerous goods list (the specialist checks before first shipment): - Lithium batteries: lithium-ion or lithium metal cells and batteries, whether built into a device, packed in the box with it, or sold on their own (power banks, spare packs). Common cell names such as 18650, 21700 and CR2032 are lithium. - Flammable liquids: perfume, nail polish, lighter fluid, fuel, paint thinner, alcohol-based sanitiser. - Gases and pressurised containers: aerosols, gas cartridges, butane, CO2 cylinders. - Corrosive or toxic substances: drain cleaner, strong acids and alkalis, pool chemicals, pesticides. A device sold empty or without its battery ("gas not included", "batteries not included") does not carry that hazard itself. A statement that a product is safe or non-hazardous does not change what it contains.

Questions

  1. Which class of our age-check list, if any, does the product or anything included with it fall in? Choice

Read the title, description and contents against the age-check list in the context, including every item in a kit, bundle or gift set. When the product contains items from more than one class, pick the class that comes first in the numbered list.

    • No age check Nothing in the product or its contents is on the age-check list.
    • Bladed article A knife, folding or locking blade, axe, razor blade or multi-tool with a blade.
    • Alcohol A drink with alcohol, or a set or kit that contains one.
    • Tobacco or nicotine Cigarettes, tobacco, vapes, e-liquids or nicotine pouches.
    • Fireworks or pyrotechnics Fireworks, sparklers, flares or smoke grenades.
    • Lighter gas or solvents Butane refills, lighter fluid, or solvent-based glues and cleaners.
    • Age-rated media A game or film rated 18.
    • Adult products Sexual products or explicit material for adults.
  2. Does the product contain or come with a battery of any kind? Yes / No

Read the title, description and contents. Count a battery built into the product, fitted in it, packed in the box, or sold as the product itself, such as a power bank. A battery the buyer must supply ("batteries not included", "takes 2 x AA") does not count. Yes: A battery is built in, fitted, packed in the box, or is the product. No: No battery is included, or the text says batteries are not included.

  3. What kind of battery comes with the product, and how is it packed? Choice

Use the dangerous goods list in the context, including the common lithium cell names. A battery the buyer must supply does not count. When the product has more than one battery, pick the lithium one.

    • No battery No battery is built in, fitted, packed or sold as the product.
    • Lithium-ion, built into a device A lithium-ion battery is built into or fitted in the device, such as a rechargeable torch or earbuds.
    • Lithium-ion, packed with a device A lithium-ion battery comes in the box separately from the device it powers, such as a spare pack.
    • Lithium-ion, sold on its own The product is a lithium-ion battery or power bank, with no device it powers.
    • Lithium metal or coin cell A non-rechargeable lithium battery, such as a CR2032 coin cell, in or with the product.
    • Non-lithium battery Alkaline, nickel-metal hydride, lead acid or another non-lithium battery.
  4. Does the product contain or come with a flammable liquid, a gas, an aerosol or a pressurised container? Yes / No

Read the title, description and contents against the flammable liquids and gases on the dangerous goods list in the context. A device sold empty ("gas not included") does not count. Yes: The product or an item included with it contains a flammable liquid, a gas, an aerosol or a pressurised container. No: Nothing included is flammable liquid, gas, aerosol or pressurised, or the device is sold empty.

  5. Does the product contain or come with a corrosive or toxic substance? Yes / No

Read the title, description and contents against the corrosive or toxic substances on the dangerous goods list in the context. Yes: The product or an item included with it is a corrosive or toxic substance such as drain cleaner, a strong acid or a pesticide. No: Nothing included is corrosive or toxic.

  6. Is the age-restricted or hazardous item the main product, or one item inside a kit, bundle or gift set? Choice

Consider every item on the age-check list or the dangerous goods list in the context that the product contains. Judge whether such an item is what the product mainly is, or one part of a larger kit, bundle or gift set, where a check set from the category is most often missed.

    • No restricted or hazardous item Nothing in the product is on either list.
    • The main product The restricted or hazardous item is what the product mainly is, such as a kitchen knife or a power bank.
    • Inside a kit or bundle The restricted or hazardous item is one part of a kit, bundle or gift set that is mainly something else.
  7. Does the product text describe the product's contents well enough to judge the age-check and dangerous goods questions? Yes / No

Judge whether the title and description say what the product is and what comes in the box, so the age-check and dangerous goods lists can be applied without asking the supplier. Yes: The text says what the product is and what is included. No: The text is too short or vague to tell what the product contains, such as a title with no description.
