Example · Survey question 7, anything else: onboarding with a concrete request

Answer to the open survey question

Onboarding felt rushed. The set-up call covered the basics in 20 minutes and then we were on our own. Once I found the templates it clicked and the team uses it every day now, but more worked examples for reports would really help the new people on my team.

Fields

  • Answer to the open survey question

Context

The answers come from the open question "Is there anything else you would like to tell us?" at the end of the quarterly customer survey of Brightlane, a project planning app sold to teams. Each row is one respondent's answer as they typed it. The themes are counted in the quarterly report, and the answers flagged for a reply go to the customer success team. Scores from the rest of the survey are joined in code.

Questions

  1. Which theme is this survey answer mainly about? Choice

Pick the theme the respondent says most about. When they give equal weight to two, pick the first they mention. Pick one option.

    • Onboarding Getting started: set-up, training, the first weeks, templates and examples for new users.
    • Ease of use How easy the app is to use day to day once set up: navigation, layout, finding things.
    • Features A feature they like, miss or want changed, such as reports or timelines.
    • Integrations Connections to other tools, such as calendars, chat apps or file storage.
    • Speed and reliability Slowness, crashes, bugs, outages or data not saving.
    • Pricing Price, plans, billing, seats or value for money.
    • Support Help from our support or customer success team, or the help center.
    • Nothing to add The respondent has nothing to say, such as "no", "n/a", "all good" or a thank you with no topic.
  2. How does the respondent feel about the product in this survey answer? Scale

Go by the whole answer, not only its first sentence.

    • Negative Mainly complaints, frustration or disappointment.
    • Mixed or neutral Praise and criticism in roughly equal measure, or a plain remark with no feeling either way.
    • Positive Mainly satisfied, perhaps with a small request or criticism.
    • Delighted Strong praise with no criticism, such as "love it" or "best tool we have used".
  3. Does the survey answer suggest a specific change the team could make? Yes / No

Count a concrete request or a named problem to fix, such as "more examples for reports" or "the Gantt view is slow with 200 tasks". General praise or dislike does not count. Yes: The answer points to something specific to add, fix or change. No: The answer names nothing specific to change.

  4. Does the survey answer also raise a second, different theme from the list? Yes / No

Count a second theme only when the respondent says something about it, not a passing word. Yes: The answer raises a second theme with its own point. No: Everything in the answer belongs to one theme.

  5. Does the respondent say they may stop using the product, cancel or switch to another tool? Yes / No

Count a stated plan or thought of leaving, cancelling, not renewing or moving to a named or unnamed other tool. Yes: The respondent says they may leave or switch. No: The respondent says nothing about leaving.

  6. Does the respondent ask a question or ask to be contacted? Yes / No

Count a direct question to us, or a request for a call, an email or a person to get in touch. Yes: The respondent asks something or asks to be contacted. No: The respondent asks nothing and does not ask to be contacted.
